Using Golfwits...
Golfwits can be used in a number of different ways. Let's take a look
at two basic uses of Golfwits in order to demonstrate its features and
functions.
- If you are using Golfwits PC on a desktop or laptop PC without a Palm-sized or Pocket PC, you can
pre-plan your game before going to the course, and print out a "Pro
Book" to use on the course for recording your round. Once you get
back to your desktop or laptop, it only takes about 15 minutes to enter your
round into Golfwits PC with the user-friendly Golfwits system. Starting
Golfwits PC, the Course List View will get you underway.
- If you have a Palm-size PC or Pocket PC, you can take Golfwits to the
course with you. This enables you to plan your shots and record your
round in real time, right on the course. Once you get back to your
desktop or laptop, your round can be automatically synchronized with your
PC. (tell me more)
Using Golfwits PC and the printed "Pro Book" on the course.
Gary McCord says, "The best players start every round with a
plan for how they are going to approach the course. They know which holes
they can attack and which holes are best to play safely." 2
With Golfwits you can preview the course and then "play" a practice
round by laying out your shots right on the map and recording the club you would
use. Current Golfwits users have found that they can take strokes off their score and have a more
enjoyable round by pre-planning their game. When you're ready to go to the course, make a "Pro Book"
printout to take with you. You can mark your shots right on the printed
map, indicate which club you used and the shot shape. Then, when you
return to your PC, you can quickly and easily enter that information into
Golfwits! Golfwits makes it simple.
Here's how to do it:
-
Launch
Golfwits by clicking the
button in the Windows Taskbar.
-
Select
Programs > Siscosoft > GolfwitsPC.
-
Golfwits
opens in the Course List window.
Golfwits begins at the Course List view when you open the
application.
Starting Golfwits PC: The Course List
View
(For a description of any feature in the Course List view, point to the
feature on the figure below and click.)
- The Course List view is where Golfwits starts.
- You select the course you wish to view from courses
displayed in the list box.
- The rounds saved for each course will appear in the Rounds
List.
- If you are on the Course Map view, the Course List view can be
selected by clicking File > Close from the command bar
menu.
The Course List view can be resized by dragging the lower right-hand corner of the frame. It can be minimized,
maximized or closed by using the buttons in the top right corner.
From the top of the window down you will see:
- The Golfwits name
- The Command Bar Menu (File, Edit, View, Tools, Help)
- The Toolbar
- The Course List (a drop-down list of courses currently installed
on your desktop PC)
(Homestead Golf and Country Club is Golfwits’ home course.
We have included the Homestead map for you as a sample.)
- The
Rounds List (showing the round played, the date, tees and score).
We will be referring to these items in the User's Guide. When you first
open Golfwits, there will be a sample round displayed and Homestead will appear
in the Course List. When you select a course, the Rounds List updates to display
previously played rounds for that course. If you have a course file on your PC
that is not showing when you click on the list-box arrow, open the File Organizer
to locate your file.

Combining Players from Different Rounds
When players have played golf on the same course and have used
copies of the same Golfwits Course File for their course maps, you can combine
up to four players in a single data file. This is very convenient
when, for example, you played with a foursome last week and then played
the course yesterday with another foursome. You want to compare your
rounds, hole-by-hole, shot-by-shot, but they are on different Round Files.
- Select File > Combine from the command bar menu.

to the Destination.

the Destination list box.
- Click the radio button next to the source player you want copied.
- Click the radio button next to the destination player you want replaced. If you choose Empty it will add the player to the
destination round. If you choose another player's name, it will
replace that player.
- Click Copy ->.

Preparing to go to the course
Now that you've had an opportunity to look at the Hal and Steve round on
Homestead, let's prepare to go to the course. You'll need to print
out a Golfwits Pro Book to take with you.
Printing and Using a Golfwits Pro Book
The "Pro Book," a common tool used by professional golfers on the
course to plan and record their round, is a
pocket-sized flip-book with a map of one hole on each page.
To print a
Golfwits Pro Book:
- Follow the User's Guide instructions to select a course and open a
round.
- Be sure you are on the Course Map view window on the course of your
choice.
- Open the Print dialog box by selecting File > Print from the
command bar menu.
- Select the Pro Book tab.
- Select the holes you want.
- Select the tee box you will use.
- Select the Par/Handicap you will use.
- Select the background color you desire. (We recommend "Storm"
or "Desert" for color printers and "Flat Gray" for
black-and-white printers).
- Select Print.
- When your printer dialog box comes up, set page orientation on "Portrait" before printing.
- Select Close when you finish printing.
To construct Pro Book:
- Cut along dotted lines.
- Assemble pages in order of holes with the Golfwits cover on the front
and the blank sheet on the back.
- Staple at the top edge of the book.

To use Pro Book on the course:
Hal recorded his first hole as shown in the Pro Book above. This is
the same information that is recorded in the Hal and Steve sample round. Here's what Hal did on hole number 1:
- He noted the tee yardage for the day and
checked to see that it corresponded with the printed yardage in the Pro
Book. He wrote in the correct yardage for the day.
- Referring to the map, he planned his tee shot.
- After teeing off, while approaching his ball, Hal found a reference point (sprinkler head, yardage marker) and used the yardage rings on
the map to mark his ball position. He noted the ball position with an
'x', the club used with a '1W', and the ball flight with a letter 'F'
indicating "fade."
- He repeated this process until he reached the green.
- Once on the green, Hal noted the pin position and his first
putt distance from the pin. He drew a little pin indicating the pin
position and wrote '30' above it to indicate that his first putt was
from 30 feet.
- In the boxes on the lower edge, he wrote 'SL' and 'H' indicating
that his first putt was short left and his second putt went in the hole.
- Finally, he wrote his score in the "Score" box.
That's the type of information Hal recorded in his Pro Book on the
course so he would have everything he needed for Golfwits when he got home.

requires a handicap for every player. If you are a scratch golfer, use a
handicap of zero.
Let's take a look at the "Skins" game as
an example.

- From the Course Map view command bar menu, open Tools > Side
Games > Games.
- The Custom Dialogs box will open.
- Select "Skins" from the "Dialogs:" list.
Select "OK" to open Skins dialog box.
- Enter the wager amount per hole in "Wager". Select "OK" when done.
- Your side game results will show up in the Golfwits Stats list.
